Jaisalmer

Once a sleepy desert city, Jaisalmer has transformed itself into a major tourist destination of India. Situated amid picturesque Thar Desert, the Jaisalmer city commands premiere position among the tourist attractions scattered all over the desert land of Rajasthan. The Jaisalmer city is revered both by Indians as well as foreign tourists. Like various other cities of Rajasthan, you will discover different facets of Jaisalmer as you explore this wonderful city with us. Tough there are historical monuments scattered all over the city but the Jaisalmer Fort will immediately command your attention. Made of sand stones and locally known as Sonar Quila, the Jaisalmer Fort is a dominating structure amidst sands.
The Jaisalmer city is also known for its old mansions, better known as Havelis. Among many of them you will find Salim ji ki haveli and Nathmal ji ki haveli as the most striking. There are other monuments too, which are equally important because of their distinct and individual architecture. The amalgamation of ancient and the medieval era architecture will catch your fancy. The Jaisalmer city is a prominent educational as well as cultural hub in the region and regularly showcases the vivid cultural aspects of Rajasthan. Among others, it includes folk dances as well as semi classical and folk music.

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest of desert forts of the world. It is situated in Jaisalmer city in Indian state of Rajasthan. It was built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal, from where it derives it name. The fort stands proudly admist the golden stretches of the great Thar Desert, on Trikuta Hill and had been the scene of many battles. Its massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion color during the day, turning to a magical honey-gold as the sun sets and camouflages the fort making it appear a part of the picturesque yellow desert. Thus, it is also known as the 'Golden Fort'.

Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli

Nathmalji-ki-Haveli was constructed by the two brothers, Hathi and Lulu who were famous for their unique architectural creativity. One of the notable Jaisalmer attractions, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli primarily served as the residence of Diwan Mohata Nathmal who was the Prime Minister of the place during that period. This haveli is still considered the best in Jaisalmer in terms of grandeur. The architecture present in this haveli is quite different from the one popular in other parts of Jaisalmer. The workmanship of Jaisalmer havelis is an amalgam of both Rajput architecture as well as Islamic art that was imported via the traders' caravan through the desert.

Salim Ji Ki Haveli

This is one of the largest and most elaborate havelis in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow lane. It is five storey high and is extensively carved. It is divided into six apartments, two owned by archaeological Survey of India, two by families who operate craft-shops and two private homes. Salim Singh was the Prime Minister of the princely state of Jaisalmer. The haveli is named after him only. It is located just below the hill. Built about 300 years ago, the haveli has an arched roof with carved brackets in the form of Peacocks. A portion of the haveli is still occupied. It is said that at one point of time the haveli had two additional wooden stories. It made the haveli as high as the Maharaja's palace. However, the maharaja got the upper story demolished.

Akal Wood Fossil Park

A 17 kilometer drive from Jaisalmer along the road to Barmer brings you to this park that takes you back to pre-historic times. It is a fossil park where stood a forest 180 millions years ago. The area submersed into the sea and the tree trunks got preserved in the form of fossils. The fossil trunks lie scattered in this park. Fossilized tree trunks are of various sizes with the largest being 13 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width. Covering about 10 sq. Km of bare hillside, the Fossil Park contains 25 petrified trunks, in total. The 21-hectare preserved area of the park lies about 17 Km from Jaisalmer on the road to Barmer.
